REFEREEING

THE MOST IMPORTANT THING IN REFEREEING IS TO GIVE THE BEST JUDGEMENT YOU CAN RENDER.

  • Study the rules over as many times as you can.
  • If you are a black belt you must always wear a suit and TIE when you attend any shiais, this will give more prestige to all black belts and to the contestants.
  • Don't hesitate to stop the match at any time and discuss the matter with your judges.
  • Start teaching your brown belts how to referee at your own club, criticise them as much as you can, at first you will have a lot to say but as time goes by you will have less and less to say.

SHIAI’S

  • If you are to have a big shiai you must have a check list to see if everything is in order
  • I think it would be best to start inter club shiais and increase the number of clubs as time goes by. Another important thing is to rotate the place of these shiais from one club to another. This will bring more interest in each area.
  • Explain the following methods:
    SINGLE ELIMINATION
    BAD POINT SYSTEM

TECHNIQUES

If you are working with beginners always stick to the basic techniques and don't stress too much shiai techniques. Keep away from sutemi wazas. Teach them a lot of give and take randori so they can get the feel of each technique.
